The Managing Director is responsible for generating, directing and supervising day-to-day administrative duties and overseeing financial and facilities management, administrative strategic planning, community relations, and marketing and development.

The Managing Director works hand in hand with the Producing Director and both report to the Executive Committee of the Board of Directors.

Collaborate with the Producing Director to ensure the optimum balance of artistic quality, financial strength, and institutional integrity.

With the Producing Director, ensure appropriate metrics that indicate the organization's future success are being set and tracked.

Establish, improve, and maintain efficient and cost-effective operations and internal/external communications for the organization, ensuring compliance with all Phoenix policies, procedures, and organizational bylaws.


SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE, AMONG OTHERS:
Financial, Marketing, Education, Development, Board Relations, Advocacy, Strategic planning.

● Actively support the Phoenix's artistic mission while managing organizational risk.
● Assume principal leadership and oversight responsibility for the Phoenix administrative, management, finance, marketing and communications, fund development, and operational functions.
● Work effectively with the board and its leadership by recognizing and respecting the difference between governance and management.
● Identify and assess all substantive internal and external issues that affect the Theater's operational performance and, in conjunction with the Producing Director, continuously inform the board of directors as to their ongoing impacts.
● Promote and maintain quality assurance at all organizational levels.
● Lead strategic efforts to further develop the resources necessary to ensure programmatic success and ongoing financial stability.
● Participate as a principal in fundraising efforts by leading organized cultivation initiatives and personally participate in fundraising calls, as appropriate.
● Lead the effort to further strengthen the Phoenix's marketing and communications strategies in order to strengthen the Phoenix's brand and continually expand audiences for new work.
● Oversee the recruitment, organization, development, and direction of staff: specifically provide day to day leadership.
● Contribute to a work environment that attracts, develops, and retains skilled people.
● Contribute to a work environment that champions equality, diversity and inclusion in all areas of operations.
● Serve as the Phoenix's principal representative on contractual agreements, ensuring that they are properly executed and in compliance with union contracts and/or obligations to funding organizations.
● Establish and maintain positive professional relationships with peers from other theaters and with representatives of the various agencies, financial institutions, professional associations, and business groups with whom the Phoenix regularly interacts.
● Act as a principal spokesperson and representative to the theater's external constituents.
● Ensure the ongoing maintenance and improvement of the facility.
● Work with the Producing Director to establish and interpret the values of the organization.

EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS:

We seek:
● A seasoned, successful nonprofit performing arts executive with a strong working knowledge of the financial and business requirements of a theater.
● A person passionate about the Phoenix's mission and the positive impact it has on the constituents and communities it serves.
● An effective collaborator with the Producing Director, staff and board, able to successfully share authority and responsibility while balancing artistic and programmatic objectives with administrative and financial feasibility.
● A self-starter with strong management skills and broad organizational experience.
● A key strategist who will assist the staff and board in updating and implementing the Phoenix's strategic plan, develop annual business plans to achieve strategic objectives, and report regularly to the board as to ongoing progress in achieving those objectives.
● A community leader, able to cultivate and interact with prospective donors, board members, and others whose financial or civic support is essential to the Phoenix's success.
● An entrepreneurial thinker with the experience to create innovative approaches to expanding the Phoenix's marketing, community engagement, and fundraising strategies.
● A strong financial manager with the skills necessary to develop and manage the annual budget and implement strategies to continuously strengthen the Phoenix's financial position.

Requirements:

- Have a bachelor's degree and/or a minimum of five years' experience with a nonprofit or for-profit organization in a management/leadership role. Experience in fundraising, Board relations, marketing and prior experience with a theatre company is highly desirable;
- Have strong business skills and experience in budgeting, and creating long-term budgets and goals, and financial management;
- Demonstrated experience and capacity to lead, manage, motivate, inspire, train and collaborate with staff, artists, Board and volunteers;
- Have the ability to successfully develop and implement long-term strategic and annual tactical plans;
- Exhibit stamina and a strong work ethic, as well as the flexibility to deal with unpredictable pressures and a variable flow of work activity with a small administrative staff;
- Be able to speak and write persuasively and serve as a spokesperson for the Theatre to the m[ublic and media;
- Have a working knowledge of artistic production including intellectual property rights and contracts;
- Have experience and knowledge of marketing, advertising and public relations activities, particularly as they relate to growing ticket and other earned income revenue;
- Demonstrate a passion for theatre and the connection between a professional company and its community.
