The Grants and Public Policy Specialist will play a key role in the growth and development of public and private foundation revenue, while also supporting the work of United Way's public policy efforts. UWCI is a nonpartisan, non-ideological organization.

Position Duties & Responsibilities
The following statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed.  They are not intended to be construed as an exhaustive list of all responsibilities, duties and skills required of personnel so classified. 

Provide support to the team leadership for United Way of Central Indiana (UWCI) grants and public policy/governmental affairs work at the federal, state and local levels. This is in support of identified priorities and in conjunction with the efforts of Indiana United Ways and United Way Worldwide. Support the development and engagement of our community partners in support of UWCI priorities.

Under the direction of Director of Grants and Foundations, the position will:
• Support proposal/reporting writing needs for the Grants Team
• Utilize prospect research skills to identify prospective public and private foundation supporters
• Draft acknowledgements for foundation donors
• Orchestrate logistics for donor meetings, including the annual Foundation Breakfast
• Assisting with drafting and developing funding agreements for United Way's grantmaking, ensuring that all contracts are property uploaded and tracked in the database
• Provide administrative support (as needed) to Director, Grants and Foundations

Public Policy
Under the direction of the Vice President, Public Policy, the position will:
• Support the identification, research, monitoring, and organizational advocacy efforts related to key local and /or regional public policy issues.
• Facilitates the development of policy reports, issue papers, op-eds and outreach materials.
• Draft communications for newsletters, email action "alerts" and social media.
• Support development and execution of the annual Public Policy agenda for UWCI and the Legislative Breakfast/Reception.
• Develop presentations as appropriate to support fundraising, agency and community engagement.
• Supports UWCI Public Policy Committee
• Provide administrative support (as needed) to Vice President of Public Policy

Other Duties and Responsibilities
• Work effectively with a diverse group of external callers, visitors and internal team members
• Prioritize and organize diversified workload and assignments while exercising sound judgement; may recommend changes in current office practices and procedures
• Create, proofread and edit letters and documents for grammatical accuracy, clarity and conciseness
• Perform special assignments and other work, on an as-needed basis.

Education and/or Experience
Bachelor's degree in nonprofit management, public administration, law, government, social work or related field required, with approximately three years of experience in proposal development and/or public policy, preferably related to human services and/or education issues. Work experience may substitute for education requirements on a case by case basis. Excellent writing, communication, project management skills are required. Good organizational and administrative skills needed. Must possess strong computer skills including database management. Familiarity with a variety of research techniques, internet and sources is necessary.
