Sycamore School is an independent, co-educational day school, accredited by the Independent Schools Association of the Central States, that serves the needs of over 400 academically gifted students in preschool through grade 8.  Founded in 1985, Sycamore is the only school in Indiana and one of few in the nation where the entire program is designed to meet the needs of gifted learners.  Dedicated and talented teachers provide a stimulating and supportive environment where engaged students experience a challenging, enriched, and accelerated program in a beautiful facility.


Sycamore School seeks an experienced middle school educator to work with faculty, students, and parents.  This is a full time, exempt position that works during the academic year Monday-Thursday, 7:45 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. and Fridays, 7:45 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. (unless otherwise specified) and Welcome Week. In this position, you will be called upon to assist the Head of Middle School to help build the school's middle school program in an innovative way. Responsibilities may include the following:


  1. Curriculum work

  • Update the organizational curriculum (teaching study skills classes during flex & after school)

  • Oversee advisory calendar & lesson plans (student-led conferences, extravaganza framework)

     2.  Student interactions

  • Lead classroom discussions with students

  • Offer study skills sessions before/after school for students & parents

  • Teach two electives a year

  • Organize and implement the TOPS program

  • Intervene with students having social struggles

  • Facilitate high school transition process and 8th grade Career Exploration Program

  • Supervision of Hagerman Commons before/after school

  • Chaperone field trips as needed

     3.  Non-teaching responsibilities

  • Supervision of students outside regular classroom time

  • Coordinate FLEX, middle school calendar, student awards, attendance

  • Track student data, maintain student records, and send transcripts

  • Organize new student/peer buddy system

  • Organize shadow visits with faculty

  • Manages middle school credit card usage and receipts

  • Oversees the Middle School when Division Head is absent

  • Other duties as needed


Qualifications & Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university; education focus preferred

  • Lead teaching experience

  • Strong writing and organizational skills

  • Strong communication skills

  • Sensitive to student and parent needs

  • Desire and passion for working with high ability, middle school students

  • Proactive planner and self-starter

  • Familiarity with gifted middle school learners

  • Understanding of differentiation practices, especially with gifted students

  • Ability to write, develop, and implement individual strategy plans for gifted learner

  • Knowledge of the academic and emotional needs of gifted students is highly preferred

  • Demonstrated experience teaching identified gifted students preferred

  • High Ability licensure is preferred
