Limited Duration Position
This is a part-time, 12-month grant funded position, renewable based on availability of funding

Martin Luther King Community Center is seeking after school staff members to join our team, including instructors, licensed teachers and youth workers with the 21st Century Community Learning Center at James Whitcomb Riley School #43 in IPS.  This is a new grant from the Indiana Department of Education, to provide after school academic enrichment, youth programming and parent engagement activities. 

Youth receive educational supports to ensure academic success. We seek team members with a wide range of educational and youth development experience, who can interact discreetly and effectively with youth.  After school staff will help with homework, encourage positive leadership development, and create suitable learning accommodations for students with learning and behavior difficulties.

Overall Responsibilities
• Working under the supervision of the After-School Site Coordinator will instruct and participate in a variety of physical activities aimed at engaging students in fun, recreational and life-long learning objectives
• Contribute to supportive team atmosphere and shared responsibilities at the Center and School #43.
• Teaching according to the educational needs, abilities and achievement of the individual students and groups of students.
• Review class material with students by discussing text, working solutions to problems, or reviewing worksheets or other assignments
• Supervise children attending the program and promote safety and respect amongst all participants
• Ensure a friendly and supportive atmosphere is maintained by developing appropriate strategies to support children in managing their behavior
• Provide feedback to students using positive reinforcement techniques to encourage, motivate, or build confidence in students.
• Encourage critical thinking and ensure that the students' knowledge is challenged and probed.
• Other duties as assigned

• Experience working with students at the elementary and middle school level
• Comfortable teaching many (if not all) of the following subjects: algebra, geometry, precalculus, calculus, physics, chemistry, biology, history, English, Spanish, ACT, SAT. *At a minimum, must be comfortable with middle school level math, science, English, history, and other subjects
• General knowledge and understanding of the needs of low-income working parents in the Crown Hill and Butler Tarkington neighborhoods
• Commitment to mission of MLK Center, while fostering inclusiveness and the values espoused by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
• Submit to criminal history background check and drug screen
