The ACLU of Indiana is seeking an experienced, mission-driven applicant for the position of Communications Director to develop and implement a variety of communications strategies to build support for the ACLU's work, further its programmatic goals, and increase public awareness and appreciation of civil liberties. Working closely with the organization's legal, advocacy, and development staff, the Communications Director plays a leadership role in communications and marketing strategy and media relations, utilizing both traditional and new media to promote public messages for ACLU issues throughout Indiana.

The American Civil Liberties Union is our nation's guardian of liberty, working daily in courts, legislatures and communities to defend and preserve the individual rights and liberties that the Constitution and laws of the United States guarantee everyone in this country. The ACLU of Indiana, headquartered in Indianapolis, is a statewide affiliate of the national ACLU.

The Communications Director will play a key role in bolstering the ACLU-IN's visibility across the state of Indiana. The ACLU-IN's communications program includes media relations, web and social media presence, print materials, and communications events. The Communications Director reports to the Executive Director and works closely with other members of the organization's nine-person staff.

Bachelor's degree in communications, journalism, or related field is required; advanced degree (i.e., MBA with concentration in marketing or communications or MA in Communications) is preferred; minimum of five years in strategic communications and media relations, ideally in an "in-house" role within a nonprofit organization; a profound, sincere, and well-articulated commitment to social justice and to the preservation and enhancement of individual rights and liberties; understanding of a broad range of civil liberties issues and advocacy strategies; extensive writing and editing experience with a variety of print and online communications media; experience working with media outlets at the national, regional, and local levels; creative aptitude and familiarity with interactive design, website and social media management, and email marketing strategy -proficiency with digital content management a plus; experience creating advocacy and membership materials including newsletters and content for member/activist e-mail alerts, blog, and website; excellent communications skills, both written and oral; superb organization skills; detail-oriented with strong follow-through and the ability to meet tight deadlines; computer proficiency, including content management systems, web development, and graphic design programs; creative, results-oriented, self-starting, willing to learn, and able to manage an aggressive schedule; willingness to work beyond the 9 to 5 hours of the normal workday, including evening and weekend meeting and events.
