The Director of Fund Development reports directly to the President and CEO and will be responsible for developing and implementing the fund development plan of the organization.  Responsibilities will include the maintenance of present funding sources and relationships and the identification and establishment of new working relationships with potential donors, private foundations, local, state, and federal granting agencies and other sources to leverage new funding for the organization.

Working closely with the management staff of the organization, the Director of Fund Development also works with volunteers to plan and implement fundraising strategies, set goals, achieve results, enhance and maintain professional expertise in the area of planned giving and implements new and emerging giving opportunities and strategies anticipating new opportunities, as well as, competition and the economy.

General Responsibilities:
•   Maintain thorough knowledge of the National Urban League and the Indianapolis Urban League, its mission, history, culture and programs and understands the organizations base of financial support and the funding requirements of all segments of the organization, both short term and long term.
•   Establish a strong working relationship with the President & CEO and management team members so that in partnership sound fundraising plans, activities and strategies that impact the entire organization are implemented.
•   Serves as staff liaison for Board Resource Development Committee.
•   Develop, and maintain a resource development plan.  The plan must include long-term and short-term timelines and institute measurable goals and objectives so that those involved in fundraising activities work together productively as a team.
•   Grant writing, utilizing a coordinated team approach.
•   Research and solicit foundation, corporate, and individual philanthropy decision makers to meet aggressive fundraising goals of the Indianapolis Urban League.
•   Develop and implement a plan for planned giving donor prospects.
•   Maintain fundraising schedules, objectives, databases and tracking systems, ensuring objectives are met; plans implemented and timely reports are generated.
•   Develop and manage computerized corporate and foundation data bases tracking systems, and mailing lists, including correspondence and follow-up.
•   Ensure accountability for corporate, foundation, and individual funding activities in accordance with the Indianapolis Urban League's financial responsibilities.
•   Work in concert with the president & CEO, and the Director of Communications to design and implement materials, publications, programs and events that will increase the local, state, and national visibility of the organization's funding needs and support.
•   Attend the necessary meetings and lead special projects as assigned.
•   Performs other duties as assigned.

Position Qualifications:
•   The successful candidate must be a graduate of the Fund Raising School of the Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University or its equivalent.  Candidates with a proven record of successful experience in the professional environment of Philanthropy and Fund Raising will also be considered.  Bachelor degree required with an endorsement as a Certified Fundraising Executive (CFRE) preferred.
•   The position requires a person of exceptional energy, talent, experience, and sensitivity.  A minimum of five (5) years of experience is required.  Specific experience in not-for-profit fund development is desired.
•   Must have the ability to form substantive and productive relationships with a wide variety of people.
•   Capable of seeing the big picture, while at the same time able to attend to important details required in a fundraising organization.
•   Person must be a highly ethical person with a strong commitment to the work of the organization.
•   Excellent organization and planning skills and ability to prioritize work load appropriately.
•   Strong conceptual and analytical skills.
•   Excellent writing, speaking, and interpersonal skills.
•   Ability to effectively interact and communicate with diverse groups in a professional and appropriate manner.
•   High degree of accuracy and attention to detail.
•   Ability to work effectively as part of a team and work independently with little supervision.
•    Excellent working knowledge of general office equipment and computers with Microsoft office products including Word, Excel, Outlook, Access and preferably Publisher.
•   The Candidate must also possess the ability to manage and track multiple projects with self-direction, creativity, and flexibility.

ADA Requirements:

Visual
Required to review detailed proposals/forms/contracts, conduct research, travel, view computer monitor, and make public presentations.

Oral
Requires heavy communication by telephone, face-to-face, public presentations.

Dexterity
Required for heavy keyboard use, heavy paperwork processing.

Other Physical
Requires the ability to negotiate local/national/travel, sit or stand for extended periods of time.
