The five IndyEast Promise Zone VISTA members will work with staff and committee chairs to achieve goals related to Housing, Education, Public Safety, Economic Development and Job Creation. The positions will start in late June 2018, and the service term is 12 months.

About the John Boner Neighborhood Centers:
The John Boner Neighborhood Centers is a not-for-profit organization established in 1971.  The mission of the Center is to inspire neighbors and partners to improve the quality of life on the Near Eastside by providing tools for change and growth.  For more information about the center, please visit

About the IndyEast Promise Zone:
Promise Zones are high-poverty communities where the federal government will work with local leaders to increase efforts to achieve neighborhood-created goals and priorities.  As the lead applicant, the John Boner Neighborhood Centers oversees the IndyEast Promise Zone.  Five committees have been created to achieve the goals of the Promise Zone over the next 7 years. 

The five committees are:
• Live IndyEast:  Affordable Housing & Redevelopment
• Work IndyEast:  Job Creation
• Buy IndyEast:  Economic Development
• Learn IndyEast:  Improve Educational Opportunities
• Safe IndyEast:  Reduce Serious & Violent Crime

About the AmeriCorps VISTA Program:
AmeriCorps VISTA is a national service program designed to fight poverty.  Members make a year-long, full-time commitment to serve on a specific project at a nonprofit organization or public agency.  AmeriCorps VISTA is open to all U.S. citizens, nationals or lawful permanent resident aliens age 18 and older.  In return for their service, members receive a modest living allowance and health benefits during their service, and have the option of receiving an education award or post-service stipend after completing their service.  For more information about the AmeriCorps VISTA program, please visit

1. Coordinate Promise Zone committee and working group meetings.
2. Work with committees and community partners to implement activities and interventions that will accomplish Promise Zone goals.
3. Develop and implement strategies to communicate and engage with neighborhood residents the successes and challenges of the Promise Zone.
4. Work with the Promise Zone Director, City of Indianapolis and IU Public Policy Institute to collect data and report outcomes to various stakeholders.
