Families First is a looking for a full-time Controller.

This position works with the CFO to ensure oversight of all finance, accounting and reporting activities as well as supervise the accounting department staff. Will have functional responsibility over accounting, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll and grants administration.  Will ensure that systems and procedures are in place to support effective program implementation and conduct flawless audits.  The Controller will work with program directors and supervisors to not only educate them regarding finance and accounting procedures but also to help support program operations.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1.  Accounting and Administration
 •  Oversee all accounts, ledgers, and reporting systems ensuring compliance with appropriate GAAP standards and regulatory requirements.  Prepare/review monthly account analyses and journal entries; ensure accurate and timely posting to general ledger.
 •  Maintain appropriate internal controls and financial procedures.
 •  Consistently analyze financial data and present financial reports in an accurate and timely manner; prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.
 •  Analyze and record investment activity including tracking the performance of invested assets in accordance with investment policy statements.
 •  Oversee all financial, project/program and grants accounting; ensure that expenditures are consistently aligned with grant and program budgets throughout the grant/funding period; prepare/review financial reporting for government, corporate and foundation grants; ensure timeliness and accuracy of financial reporting.
 •  Coordinate all audit activity and tax filings.
 •  Ensure legal and regulatory compliance regarding all financial functions.

2.  Planning and Policy
 •  Assist in the annual budgeting and planning process; compare actual results to budget with a view to identify, explain, and correct variances as appropriate.
 •  Work with program staff to develop assumptions for grant proposal budgets; assist the CFO in preparing grant proposal budgets.
 •  Remain up-to-date on nonprofit audit best practices and state and federal laws and regulations regarding nonprofit operations.
 •  Strengthen internal communications with staff at all levels; create and promote a positive and supportive work environment.

3.  Perform other duties as requested and/or required by management.

KNOWLEDGE, EXPERIENCE, AND SKILL REQUIRED:

Minimum of a Bachelor's degree in Accounting (CPA preferred, but not required) with a minimum of five years' relative work experience with at least three years of experience in the nonprofit sector.  Experience in gathering, evaluating and reporting financial information to internal and external stakeholders.  Experience working in a complex nonprofit environment with multiple programs. Experience coordinating audit activities and managing accounts payable and receivable, general ledger, payroll and accounting for investments.  A track record in grants management as it relates to compliance and reporting of government, corporate and foundation grants is necessary.  Excellent analytical and abstract reasoning skills, plus excellent organization skills. Knowledge of and/or aptitude for Accounting Software (Financial Edge), spreadsheets (Excel), and word processing (Word). Knowledge of the purchasing function and competitive bid concept, time management skills and the ability to prioritize. Must be able to communicate and work well with all levels of staff and management and have the ability and desire to translate complex financial concepts to individuals at all levels, including financial and program staff.
