Part time, 20 hours per week

The CYS Assistant will be heavily involved in our Questers program, assisting young patrons in developing STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art and math) skills utilizing technology and traditional tools. 

Specific duties include but are not limited to:

• design and present or co-present a wide variety of programs for children of all ages with emphasis on challenge programs for 8- to 12-year-olds;
• facilitate groups of children in the completion of independent technology and maker-based projects;
• assist children and their caregivers in selecting and locating library materials;
• provide instruction or assistance in the use of the library's online catalog, electronic databases, and other computer resources;
• attend external events and conduct offsite programming at community locations as assigned, requiring occastional travel;
• purchase program materials and supplies within budgetary framework;
• accurately record and maintain program attendance and other department statistics;
• participate in designing strategies to effectively market children's programs.

Minimum qualifications for this position include at least one year of experience working with groups of children, preferably in a library or educational setting; ability to effectively present programs to both children and adults; familiarity with children's literature and electronic resources; excellent communication and customer service skills; proficiency in conducting Internet searches and navigating websites; familiarity with social media platforms including Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.  

Candidates must also be comfortable with current technology and enjoy learning new technologies/devices as they become available.  Familiarity with educational technology such as robots, drones, circuitry, etc. is strongly preferred.  A related bachelor's degree is preferred, but consideration will be given to college students pursuing a relevant degree.

Physical demands include being able to drive to other locations and load/unload materials used for outreach and programming.

The preferred work schedule is 3-9 p.m. Monday and Tuesday and 2-8 p.m. on Thursdays, plus one Friday evening (until 7 p.m.), one Saturday (9-5) and one Sunday (1-5) per month.
