  • Indianapolis, IN, USA
  • Full Time

Organization Overview:
The Susan G. Komen Tissue Bank (KTB) at the IU Simon Cancer Center (IUSCC) is the only repository in the world for normal breast tissue and matched serum, plasma and DNA. By studying normal tissue, we accelerate research for the causes and prevention of breast cancer. To more deeply understand the evolution of the disease, it is necessary to compare abnormal, cancerous tissue against normal, healthy tissue. We are committed to making a difference by acting as advocates for thinking, sharing and understanding NORMAL.
Position Duties:
The Komen Tissue Bank is currently seeking a Health Research Informatics Programmer. This position is responsible for collaborating with principal investigators and their teams to provide data collection, analysis and reporting services for health research projects. This position will design, develop, test, document, and implement software applications (including data/database models). These projects may be technically complex, requiring a high degree of analytical ability, and may span diverse domains such as global health initiatives or cancer research. Project management skills will be essential in keeping the application development on track with the other components of the research studies.
This position will participate as a part of a University wide team focused on standardizing data management and reporting but will often work independently from other application developers, and in those cases must oversee the entire life cycle of application development and provide regular progress reports to the principal investigators and their research teams. Since budgets for these projects are typically tight, this position must provide sound advice to the principal investigator on the feasibility of each project, given the allocated resources. This position must interact effectively with multiple University groups including IT, security, and regulatory to leverage the resources required to meet the technical needs of the research projects.
Domestic travel may be required several times a year for site visits and conferences.
Note: We are not able to sponsor employment visas for this position.
Position Qualifications:
Bachelor's Degree in computer science, informatics, health IT sciences or a related discipline, plus 2 years of work experience in application design, development, testing, documenting, and user training/support.
A combination of education and experience may be considered.
Strong familiarity with at least one SQL Database such as MySQL or Oracle. Working knowledge of the LAMP environment, with at least some experience in Python or a similar language using a web framework such as Django. Working knowledge of modern browser development including HTML5, CSS, Javascript, and some development libraries such as jQuery and Bootstrap. Working knowledge of open source build and deployment tool chains such as maven, pip, virtualenv, rake, chef, ansible, docker, or similar tools. Working knowledge of at least one version control system, preferably git, and history of collaborating and tracking work using a ticket system such as Jira or Github Issues. Familiarity with basic concepts, practices, and procedures in database design, programming, systems development, and software engineering, including but not limited to object-oriented techniques and languages, database principles and programming, and open-source methodologies.
