The Foundation seeks an experienced, collaborative and strategic professional to serve as Director of Communications. Working closely with the President & CEO and Program staff, the Director will develop and implement communications strategies to effectively articulate the Foundation's mission and work to external audiences. The Director of Communications reports to the President & CEO.

About the Richard M. Fairbanks Foundation
Governed by a ten-member Board of Directors, the Foundation is an independent, private foundation awarding grants to tax-exempt organizations serving greater Indianapolis, Indiana. The Foundation has three focus areas: Education, Health, and the Vitality of Indianapolis. In addition, several organizations receive grant support from the Foundation due to a historical connection with Dick Fairbanks and his family. Principal Duties and Responsibilities
• Develop and manage strategies, plans and materials that communicate and reflect the Foundation's mission, vision, goals and strategies.
• Identify opportunities, challenges and emerging issues and work with leadership and staff to develop appropriate communications responses.
• Manage the Foundation's print and electronic communications, including the website, social media accounts and e-newsletter.
• Provide communications support to the Foundation's leadership and Program staff and prepare talking points, speeches, presentations and other materials as needed.
• Create communications strategies that help the Foundation's leadership cultivate and enhance meaningful relationships with external audiences, including grantees, local and state policymakers, the private sector, advocacy organizations, community stakeholders, and the media to advance shared interests and goals.
• Effectively manage outside communications-related consultants, including writers, photographers, graphic designers and others.
• Evaluate and report on the reach and impact of the Foundation's communications efforts and, in collaboration with leadership, refine these efforts accordingly.
• Serve as the point person on media interaction as needed.
• Plan and oversee major events, convenings, and announcements.
 
Qualifications
We are seeking candidates who have content knowledge and work experience in at least one of the Foundation's three focus areas; who have excellent writing and editing skills; who are strategic thinkers; and who have demonstrated project management skills and attention to detail. Ideal candidates should have:
• Relevant education, training and experience, to include both of the following:
     o A bachelor's degree from a four-year college or university and three to five years of relevant experience. A degree in public policy, health, education, the life sciences, or a related field is preferred.
     o Practical experience as a communications professional, as demonstrated by a bachelor's degree in marketing, communications, journalism or a related field; or three to five years of experience in marketing, communications, and/or public relations. An equivalent combination of education, training and experience will be considered.
• Excellent oral communication skills, including the ability to listen well, convey thoughts clearly, speak in public, and make complex issues understandable and relevant to external audiences.
• Exceptional writing and editing skills, including the ability to write for a variety of audiences and types of media.
• Experience managing, evaluating and creating content for social media platforms, including Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn.
• The ability to demonstrate previous experience, including work examples.
• An extremely detail-oriented approach to work, with a track record of success in developing and implementing new ideas and programs in a timely manner, including the ability to prioritize projects, meet deadlines and support others in doing the same.
• The ability to create and manage detailed project plans for events, initiatives, and cross-sector convenings.
• High tolerance for ambiguity and ability to thrive in an environment of growth and change.
• Demonstrated ability to effectively participate in a team environment.
• Experience working with different types of media and a variety of stakeholders, including charitable organizations' executives and boards of directors and the communities they serve.
• Excellent judgment, integrity, and commitment to personal responsibility and accountability.
