The Communication Officer for the Indiana Area and The Indiana Conference shall lead and manage the communications department so that there is excellence in communication in 4 core areas:
• Episcopal Office and Bishop's vision and messages;
• Public Relations, keeping the laity and clergy of the conference informed;
• Marketing of core ministry items and conference initiatives; and
• Management, supervision, and fiduciary responsibility for the communications department budget and team.

The Communication Officer shall create and have oversight for a communication strategy for the Annual Conference that is aligned with Conference mission, vision and values.

1. Work with the Episcopal leader providing guidance for and implementation of the messages from the Bishop and the work of the Episcopal Office.
2. The Communication Officer will develop a process to seek out and gather news and information so that clergy and laity are informed.
3. She/he will be available to meet with leaders of the Conference to provide direction for their communication and marketing needs using the most effective media.
4. The Communication Officer will have fiduciary, supervisory, and management responsibilities for the Communications department and team.
5. Provide guidance to crisis communication and meeting the news media, including creating statements or press releases that guide people who speak on behalf of the Bishop, Cabinet, Directors, the Annual Conference and/or the local church
6. Marketing Conference-wide initiatives
7. Provide for on-site media coverage of Conference events
8. Provide for videotaping and creating videos

1. Committed to working in a Christian environment
2. Education:  Masters or post-graduate degree in communications, journalism, public relations or a similar area of study
3. At least 10 years of related work experience leading a communications team, and with project management
4. Strong writing and public speaking skills; ability to represent the Conference's "voice" when required
5. Demonstrated people skills; able to work in collaborative teams
6. Professional management and supervisory skills
7. Time management – this position requires in office presence as well as time in the field
8. Accountable to the Executive Assistant to the Bishop and the Conference Council on Finance and Administration for fiduciary accountability
9. Knowledgeable, experienced and skilled in publication editing and writing for print and electronic media;
    a. Knowledge in audio, video and photographic production and duplication;
    b. Knowledge of and skills for crises communication and how to relate with public media;
    c. Able to lead and inspire staff creating a team approach in effective communication;
    d. Able to design and execute a public relations campaign;
    e. Able to design and execute a strategic marketing plan;
    f. Able to plan, manage and stay within a fiscal budget;
    g. Knowledgeable of the history, theology and polity of The United Methodist Church
