The REACH Active Living Coordinator will be responsible for coordinating Health by Design's subawardee activities as part of the Reaching for a Healthier Marion County partnership, a federally funded initiative of the Marion County Public Health Department, leading efforts to advocate for improved infrastructure so that walking is safe, convenient, and encouraged.

Position Description 
REACH – Racial and Ethnic Approaches to Community Health – is a national program administered by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to reduce racial and ethnic health disparities. Locally, this funding award has a priority emphasis on African American/Black populations, which experience a disproportionate burden of many chronic diseases, including hypertension, diabetes, and obesity. 
Health by Design is one of several partners in this county-wide initiative. Other Reaching for a Healthier Marion County aims are to: increase availability and access to fruits, vegetables, and other nourishing foods in a variety of venues; increase the percentage of women who initiate and sustain breastfeeding along with increasing supportive work environments for lactating mothers; and, maximize the use of existing health education community resources. 
The REACH Active Living Coordinator will work in five geographic areas with high numbers of pedestrian crashes to identify, prioritize and implement targeted best-practice countermeasures. They will directly engage residents, neighborhood leaders and local community organizations that will help conduct community education and outreach and plan and implement activities to achieve safer walking conditions. Long-term outcomes will be improved community design with more activity-friendly routes connecting everyday destinations and an increased number of people with safe and accessible places for physical activity. 
The position will require travel within Marion County; limited in- or out-of-state travel may be necessary for training opportunities. Some evening and weekend hours will be necessary. 
The position is funded through a federal five-year award, which is subject to annual renewal. 
Education & Experience
A bachelor's degree is required, along with at least three years of related work and/or volunteer experience; a master's degree may be substituted for two years of experience.
The ideal candidate will have knowledge of and experience in one or more disciplines related to the broad definition of health (e.g. public health, transportation, housing, planning/design/engineering, community economic development, public policy/affairs/administration, social work, etc.). 
In addition, the ideal candidate will have experience working with diverse community partners; a deep understanding of the principles of equity, inclusiveness and power across multiple dimensions (such as race, ethnicity, ability, gender, sexual orientation, income and place); and life and/or professional experience working across those dimensions. 
Position Duties
The REACH Active Living Coordinator will provide leadership on the development, implementation and evaluation of Health by Design's Reaching for a Healthier Marion County deliverables. Tasks will include, but are not limited to: 
• Conducting needs assessment and information gathering processes, including:
 o Inventorying and auditing the safety, accessibility and connectivity of neighborhoods, schools, transit stops and other key destinations  
 o Collecting, analyzing, interpreting and disseminating quantitative and qualitative data o Using geographic data and mapping 
 o Conducting key informant interviews, focus groups and community conversations
• Leading public outreach efforts, including: 
 o Recruiting and working alongside Community Champions in each priority area
 o Engaging with neighborhood groups, community partners, businesses, schools, decision-makers and residents
• Coordinating marketing and communications strategies and activities, including:
 o Writing and distributing emails, website content, newsletters and social media 
 o Developing materials, presentations, and tools for community outreach and engagement 
 o Presenting at meetings, events and conferences
 o Conducting and coordinating media advocacy 
 o Compiling and publishing pedestrian safety information, data and reports in print and digital formats
 o Tracking and developing success stories and lessons-learned
 o Promoting support for walking and walkability
 o Building relevant brands
• Leading the development, prioritization and implementation of customized area action plans, including both short- and long-term interventions
• Providing education, training and technical assistance
• Leading Health by Design's Health Equity Action Team
• Coordinating and participating in all project reporting, meetings, calls, trainings, and other events
• Monitoring, tracking, evaluating and reporting activities and impact
• Contributing to policy, systems, and environmental change strategies within the overall partnership
• Planning for long-term project sustainability
• Providing support to Marion County Public Health Department and City of Indianapolis staff
• Representing Health by Design and the project at partner meetings and events
• Initiating, building and maintaining cross-sectoral partnerships with local, regional and state stakeholders 
• Supporting Health by Design's broader efforts including strategic plan implementation, committee and action team activities, events and advocacy
• Performing other responsibilities of this position, as required
