Position type:  Full time, Maternity Leave (April 8 - May 24, 2019)
Hours:  Monday-Friday, 7:45 a.m. - 3:45 p.m. (unless otherwise specified)
Reports to:  Head of Middle School

Position Summary:
Sycamore School has an opening for a maternity leave teaching position in our middle school (5th - 8th grade).  We are looking for an experienced Language Arts teacher.  In this position you will be called upon to help build the school's Language Arts program in an innovative way.  Essential functions for this position include the following:

Curriculum Work
Develop lesson plans inspired by the curriculum map

Student Interactions
Lead classroom discussions with students (Harkness Method - training provided)
Supervise students both in and outside of the classroom
Create assignments, quizzes, and tests to measure students' understanding and mastery of Language Arts
Respond to student questions during class and those that are received outside the classroom as they relate to Language Arts
Provide feedback to students by answering questions, grading assignments/quizzes/tests and completing report cards (enter grades into gradebook, calculate final grades, and complete comments for each student)
Lead an advisory group

Parent Communication
Respond to parent questions, comments, and concerns in a timely and professional manner
Participate in parent conferences throughout the year
Provide student-related feedback by entering student grades in the online grade book and comments on report cards
Update individual classroom web page and calendar regularly

Professional Development
Stay current in teaching strategies and developments in language arts and gifted education
Meet with division head through the academic year for assessment, planning, etc.
Attend and contribute to grade level, departmental, and divisional meetings
Participate in professional development days throughout the school year

Non-teaching Responsibilities
Supervise students outside of regular classroom time (ie recess, study hall, dances)
Manage carpool drop-off or pick-up as needed

Qualifications & Requirements:
Bachelor's degree (focus in English and Education)
Lead teaching experience
Strong writing and communication skills
Enthusiastic about literature
Desire to work with high ability, middle school students
Ability to write, develop, and implement lesson plans for gifted learners
Gifted and Talented Endorsement or High Ability Licensure is preferred
Familiarity with middle school learners
Demonstrated experience teaching identified gifted students preferred
Understanding of differentiation practices, especially with gifted students
Knowledge of the academic and emotional needs of gifted students is highly preferred
