The Vice President for Advancement serves as the Chief Advancement Officer and is responsible for designing and implementing comprehensive institutional advancement programs toward the ultimate goal of significantly increasing overall institutional profile, constituent engagement, and fundraising outcomes. The advancement function includes responsibility for marketing, communication, and total development including the Annual Fund, alumni and wider community leader engagement, foundation relations, major gifts and planned giving, endowment, campaign initiatives, and prospect research.
The Vice President for Advancement reports to the President (Dr. David Mellott as of July 1, 2019) and serves on the senior Leadership Team of the seminary.

Duties and Responsibilities
• Advance the mission, vision, and short and long-term goals of the Seminary in concert with the President and senior administrative colleagues.
• Provide supervision of development, marketing and communication functions.
• Work closely with the President in all phases of his/her advancement activities .
• Serve as a member of the Seminary Leadership Team and as the staff liaison for Advancement to the Board of Trustees and the Board Committee on Advancement. 
• Maintain close working relationships with members of the Board of Trustees and key alumni and friends of the Seminary.
• Maintain strong working relationships with faculty and staff whose cooperation is essential to effective outreach and fund raising.Participate in strategic discussions and develop goals, budgets, and programs to strengthen the Seminary.
• Hire, train and guide members of the advancement team toward accountable, goal-oriented outcomes.
• Participate in, and lead as appropriate, in grant writing and grant supervision.
• Serve as an exemplary Seminary advocate in the wider community with local leaders, religious organizations, business and corporate partnerships, and other leaders and build relationships that closely link the Seminary with the community, with the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), and with the church ecumenical.
• Demonstrate commitment to learning and staying updated on the latest issues and dynamics regarding philanthropy.
• Embody values of caring, compassion, justice, integrity, competence, and affirmation.
• Treat members of the Seminary community with fairness, dignity, and respect – seeking a spirit of unity and harmony to achieve a common mission.
• Development specific responsibilities
    o Maintain a portfolio of high net worth individuals and secure major, capital, and planned gifts as well as annual gifts and endowment support.
    o Create and execute fund raising plans that utilize best practices in annual, major, and planned gift programs to meet fundraising goals.
    o Ensure effective processes in all phases of donor qualification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship.
• Marketing and Communication specific responsibilities
    o Develop an overall brand, marketing and communication strategy and annual plan.
    o Work with the recruiting team as a key internal customer of marketing and communications resources and expertise.

Other duties as assigned by the President.

Travel is required: the Vice President must be willing to travel a significant percentage of time in his or her work with donors and as a representative of the Seminary.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
The successful candidate will display a record of leadership and accomplishment in advancement with a proven track record of fundraising success, especially in major gift solicitations. Strong organizational, supervisory, and leadership capabilities are required. The successful candidate will document successful solicitation of numerous major and principal gifts and present a history of building advancement program and fund raising performance. Exemplary interpersonal skills are essential. This person must be a leader whose values align with those of the Seminary, and who demonstrates a high level of commitment to theological education and specifically to the mission of Christian Theological Seminary.

The ability to work with diverse constituencies and colleagues should be evident. Other important characteristics include a strong work ethic, competitive nature, personal integrity, emotional intelligence, a sense of humor, excellent communication skills, strategic thinking and planning skills, and a vocational call to Christian higher education. Evidence of commitment to lifelong learning and professional growth is required.

Education and Experience
A bachelor's degree is required and master's degree is preferred. Significant experience as an advancement professional in higher education; leadership and supervisory experience is preferred.
