Trauma Counselor will provide counseling, advocacy and case management services for clients seeking services for trauma caused by violence. Position will also be responsible for providing information and training to community partners and to general public through community outreach.
Legacy House is an Indianapolis nonprofit agency established in 2001 to provide counseling and advocacy to victims of violence. Our professional staffs of counselors provide a full range of victim services to families and individuals.
Legacy House provides compassionate support to people affected by all types of violence. Most of our clients have experienced trauma caused by criminal violence such as homicide, rape and sexual assault, child molestation, childhood sexual abuse, domestic violence, criminal confinement, and human trafficking. Our clients may also experience trauma following catastrophic events such as motor vehicle and other accidents, explosions, natural disasters, fire and suicide. A victim of trauma caused by violence may have an array of needs that they are unable to address without help. Legacy House provides that support, and our staff offers a healing presence to help clients move from victim to survivor to thriver.
ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES: (Other duties may be assigned)
• Meet with clients and/or family members and assesses client needs related to trauma and other care coordination needs.
• Collaborate with clients (and supervisor/team) to prepare individual plans of care to address assessed needs.
• Manage a caseload of clients; identifying therapeutic, advocacy and care needs; engages other team members in meeting these needs as indicated.
• Assist in completing and filing applications for orders of protection.
• Facilitates a variety of individual, family and group advocacy and therapeutic interventions.
• Provides victim advocacy to access case management needs, services or other coordination of care as indicated by client need.
• Regularly evaluates and updates the progress and revise care plan at intervals determined by guidelines; consulting with client, family and team in this process.
• Acts as an advocate for the client in meeting their needs.
• Completes documentation of activities in an electronic record and written reports or data entry requirements in an accurate and timely manner.
• Continuously evaluates clients' mental status and trauma-recovery needs, reporting progress to the team and treating psychiatrist, if applicable.
• Identifies community resources and assists clients in their access to these resources.
• Provides indirect service to external agencies and community through consultation and education.
• Alters activities/behaviors to reflect and ensure adequate care which is appropriate to the age of the clients served
• Serve as a coach or trainer for interns and/or other staff
• Attend court or other legal meetings and provide support for clients who testify or attend court hearings.
• Use research-based best-practice models of care
• Enrich professional development by participating in at least 20-hours per year of field-related education (conference attendance, reading from professional journals/books, taking classes, attending lunch-and-learn or other internal or external professional development opportunities).
• Performs other job related duties as assigned

• Maintains protected health information in accordance with HIPAA privacy guidelines and regulations

• Maintain compliance with Legacy House & the Health and Hospital Corporation of Marion County requirements (annual PPD/chest x-ray, annual vaccines, etc).
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE ( SKILLS, ABILITIES AND KNOWLEDGE TYPICALLY ACQUIRED THROUGH):
• Master's degree in human services field, posses, be eligible or completing supervision experience for clinical licensure in the state of Indiana. If not currently licensed, a detailed plan for obtaining licensure must be submitted to and approved by the Supervisor of Clinical Services prior to hire. Must obtain licensure within 90 days of hire and maintain licensure to maintain employment.
• Ability to fulfill duties noted in area specific competencies (Adult, Acute, Youth, Family Systems, Domestic Violence, Sexual Assault, Other trauma-related competencies)
• Valid Indiana driver's license
• Pass Health and Hospital pre- employment screenings and background check
SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED:
• Knowledge of trauma-based care and victim services
• Understanding of and ability to implement a strengths-based, community treatment model
• Strong interpersonal skills with ability to be both clear and concise in written and verbal communication
• Solid knowledge of psychiatric/addiction diagnoses and understanding of their impact on behavior and all life domains
• Solid knowledge of psychotropic medications and their uses and side effects
• Willingness and ability to work cooperatively in a multidisciplinary team
• Ability to use age appropriate communication skills
• Ability to interpret and apply complex directives/information/regulations
• Crisis intervention skills
CONTACTS - INTERNAL/EXTERNAL:
• Daily contacts with all levels of Legacy House, Health & Hospital Corporation and the Marion County Public Health Department staff and management
• Regular contact with clients, their families, community members, community agencies and the public
• Act as a resource and/or trainer to other providers or community organizations
• Attend advocacy and/or awareness functions as a representative of Legacy House
• Contact with legal providers/court as an advocate for clients
SPECIAL EFFORT REQUIRED:
• Organizational skills
• Patience and tact in interacting with a wide variety of people, often during times of stress
• Need to work outside of normal business hours
• Ability to manage emotions and behavior while working with clients who share experiences of extreme and intense trauma, abuse, and other difficult information.
• Ability to maintain schedule of professional appointments for clients in crisis and who are dealing with complex trauma-related symptoms of distress. Absences should be scheduled with sufficient notice to avoid appointment cancellations whenever possible.
