As Director of Community Forestry, you will provide leadership and vision for KIB's forestry team to successfully work with neighbors to plant urban trees.  You will work closely with all KIB Departments and staff to plant thousands of trees within the community, strengthen ongoing partnerships with strategic partners, and evaluate best practices for long-term success of existing trees. You will lead five full-time staff.

We are also one of the most volunteered-for organizations in Indianapolis, working with about 20,000 volunteers each year to plant trees and native landscapes, organize litter cleanups, turn vacant lots into pocket parks, create outdoor classrooms, restore habitat, and educate and employ youth.

Duties, Functions and Responsibilities:  
• Lead the community forestry program for KIB in all facets of the organization's work across KIB departments and organizational relationships. 
• Provide a structure and vision for community forestry at KIB that encourages collaboration to meet tree planting desired outcomes, fulfill long-term impact goals and standardize best practices.
• Supervise, train and provide guidance to the Community Forestry Arborists, 10,000 Trees Community Arborists, Youth Tree Team Manager and Assistant Manager and Pruning/Survivability Coordinator. 
• Work collaboratively with Community Forestry staff to create & implement annual department goals and strategize ways to increase reach of KIB Community Forestry in Indianapolis with the help of other KIB departments and external partners
• Support education efforts to engage community in supporting a healthy urban forest. 
• Coordinate tree planting application process, delegation of project application review and lead effort for selection of project for the following year.
• Coordinate department vehicle fleet, warehouse and tools needs.
• Source high quality trees and materials and establish vendor relations for best management practices.
• Manage 1/3 of the tree planting application (approximately 10 each year) by working with the project partner, identifying tree species and location, obtaining necessary permits and reviews, assisting with coordination of delivery and leading volunteers on planting day.
• Attend and provide support for higher level strategic planning along with internal and external meetings leadership meetings.  
• Lead all aspects of the functionality and maintenance of KIB's Tree Canopy Map for continued data tracking of all tree planted and maintained.
• Participate and establish a role for KIB in national endeavors, identify ways to provide input and support.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
• Strong listening and communication skills
• 2 or more years of experience effectively developing and leading a team
• Experience responsibility managing a budget in excess $1.5M
• Ability to balance multiple tasks with strong decision and problem solving skills
• Possess a solid understanding that diversity, equity and inclusion are integral parts of effectively executing our work, this position will require ease and familiarity with connecting and relating to people of color and different backgrounds
• Valid driver's license and is comfortable driving a truck and trailer, forklift and skidsteer, or willing to learn
• Able to walk over three miles/day in various weather conditions
• Able to lift containerized trees in excess of 50 lbs during planting seasons 
• Capable of safely using arboricultural tools, such as shovels, pick-axes, pruners
• A working knowledge of Geographic Information Systems skills a plus
• Able to positively represent KIB's values

• Bi-lingual proficiency skills a plus

• Desire to work in the outdoors on a regular basis in all types of weather
Education and/or equivalent experience:
5 years of community forestry experience and Bachelor's degree; (or equivalent combination of education and experience).  ISA Certified Arborist required with additional certification a plus.
