Part time Paid Position - 15 – 25 hours per week

Humane Society for Boone County is looking for our first Volunteer Program Manager. The successful, self-starting candidate will quickly create the program and all processes. Once established, the Manager will implement and strategically sustain a volunteer program that meets the needs of animals, our program coordinators and fundraising/community engagement goals. The selected applicant will have excellent skills in creating order and building on our existing systems.

This 15-25 hour a week position offers flexible hours, M-F daytime, evening and weekend hours will be necessary. Some duties can be delegated to other trained volunteers. It is incumbent upon the successful applicant to set personal boundaries that maintain 15-25 hours of service on average each week. 
Start date preference: October 2019. 
Key Responsibilities: 
On the first day, establish a 30-day work-plan with our consultant to execute an orderly system for application (already created) and onboarding (drafted). (See below.) Once established, begin recruitment from existing volunteer applicants.   Build the online software program fields (through Better Impact) to support the Manager's duties. Create and maintain all volunteer records 
•  Train current volunteers and supervisors on the app, sign-in and sign out, other general policies, procedures/code of conduct (already created) and your role with them 
•  Create and maintain schedules – dog and cat care, events, shelter open hours, cleaning, etc.
•  Working from a robust recruitment plan, actively recruit volunteers throughout the county – via website, print and social media, community calendars and community events. Coordinate monthly, 45-minute "call outs" to anyone interested in volunteering for HSforBC. 
•  Lead volunteer approval process for all HSforBC opportunities and works to align volunteer capabilities with the best needs and outcomes 
•  Build and design presentation materials for monthly-scheduled, 1-hour, initial volunteer orientation that is required for all newly-approved volunteers. Create a 12-month calendar. Schedule new volunteers to attend their required orientation (and sign all paperwork there.) Ensure each receives job-specific training via their supervisors after orientation. 
•  Train and coach new volunteer supervisors to effectively manage and support volunteers 
•  Create a climate and creative, planned opportunities that invite volunteer satisfaction yearround, including a minimum of thanking volunteers for service at their conclusion, establishing regular check-ins with each volunteer and providing meaningful recognition and reward 
•  Address volunteer issues as they arise, including performance concerns, and work toward mutually-favorable outcomes. Re-assign/terminate volunteers in cooperation with supervisors per policies. 
•  Regularly monitor all aspects of the volunteer program to ensure it works well for volunteers and HSforBC. Provides strategic leadership for its daily management and future growth. 
•  Must be able to cover key animal care shifts if no volunteers are scheduled
•  Other duties as assigned

•  Competent computer skills - creating Word/PDF documents, scanning, customizing/using cloudbased software programs via tutorials, email use, creating online forms, back up computers
•  Timely, professional responsiveness via phone, text, email or in-person (during working hours) 
•  Ability to effectively use social media (post, respond) in a professional manner 
Education and Experience 
•  1+ years of personal volunteer service required (at an animal/rescue shelter, preferred) 
•  Experience with animals required 
•  Experienced self-starter and independent problem-solver required 
•  Experience creating or building a program/project from start required 
•  Experience in project and small budget management required 
•  Experience in managing volunteers required (2+ years managing a program, preferred) 
•  Training or certification in volunteer/nonprofit management or animal shelter services preferred 
•  High school diploma or equivalent preferred 
Work Environment 
•  Manager will work at the shelter (to use office equipment/make copies). 
•  If not using the shelter computer, must have regular access to a good-working computer with WiFi 
•  Must have a mobile phone with unlimited text communication 
•  Must be able to lift up to 40 lbs.
•  Must be physically able to make 10-60 minute presentations 1-4 times a month 
•  Must have a reliable method of transportation 
•  Must be able to handle loud, chaotic shelter environment and situations that may cause stress
