Horizons at St. Richard's Episcopal School seeks a ​full-time Executive Director to lead its dynamic and successful program, which works to close the summer learning gap for children who are currently experiencing poverty.
Organization Description:
Horizons at St. Richard's Episcopal School is part of a nationwide organization. Founded in 1964 as a summer enrichment program for low-income students, Horizons National has grown into a movement of more than 60 program sites in 22 states across the US. The Horizons model emphasizes a local focus. Every Horizons program is located on the campus of an independent school, college, or university and serves children from the local community. This approach enables each program to develop longstanding relationships with the children they serve, and it utilizes campuses that are typically empty during the summer months. Horizons' educational model has been wildly successful in helping eliminate the notorious "summer slide" while greatly reducing the achievement gap between low-income children and their more affluent peers. Horizons at St. Richard's Episcopal School (SRES) is Indiana's only Horizons site. Although it is part of a national organization, our program operates with a great deal of independence. Our Executive Director most directly reports to the SRES Head of School and works closely with the Advisory Board of Horizons. 
Horizons at SRES is a full-day summer program designed to inspire curiosity and deep engagement with learning for students from low-income families in Indianapolis, with additional programming offered throughout the traditional school year. Our program embraces project-based learning, classroom time, field trips, enrichment activities, community building and a small-group setting​ ​(15 students per grade level)​ ​to encourage students to learn and grow. Horizons' hands-on approach creates an environment that fosters a love of learning and the academic and social skills essential to becoming responsible citizens. We are a family of committed learners: our program has an 80%+ student return rate and a 94% daily attendance rate. Horizons also works to build healthy minds and healthy bodies, so our program teaches students how to swim. Learning to swim not only builds physical confidence but academic, social, and emotional confidence as well.

Position Qualifications:
● Bachelor's Degree in a related field (examples include: non-profit management, business administration, or education).
● Three to five years of budget management and fundraising experience, including grant research and grant writing, with proven successful results.
● Five years of program development, implementation and management with demonstrated effectiveness (i.e. program quality, stability, growth, and measurable impact).
● Three to five years of experience recruiting, hiring, training, and supervising staff.
● Demonstrated ability to effectively multitask, prioritize work, and meet deadlines. 
● Demonstrated ability to work in a fast-paced, energetic, and demanding environment while building and maintaining positive working relationships with staff and those served.
● Demonstrated ability to work with a diverse group of people with different interests and relationships with Horizons. 
● Knowledge of K-12 education and youth development fields is preferred.
Position Duties:
The Executive Director is a full-time, salaried position. During the summer months (approximately 8 weeks), the Executive Director is required to be on site full time; during other months there is flexibility to work from home. Some evening and weekend work is required, particularly for quarterly family events and during the spring, and there is some limited travel.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

● Develop, in partnership with the Development Committee, annual fundraising goals, strategy to reach those goals, and a timeline.
● Conduct prospect research; write and submit grant proposals and grant reports in a timely manner.
● Identify and approach funders at all levels: individuals, foundations, corporate foundations, and businesses/corporations. 
● Track fundraising efforts: grants applied for, foundations, corporate foundations and businesses/corporations approached, individual donor information entered into the database and updated on a regular basis. 
● Record and acknowledge all donor gifts, in a timely manner; send necessary tax information.
● Track grant reporting requirements and follow through as needed.
● Collaborate with the St. Richard's business office to ensure accurate recordkeeping and monitor and approve all revenue and expenses.
● Create annual budget (September 1st - August 31st), in partnership with the Development Committee, Treasurer, and SRES CFO (as needed), to adequately meet the financial needs of the Horizons program. The annual budget is usually around $350,000.
● Manage the budget: enter revenue and expenses monthly; provide quarterly financial statements for review by the Advisory Board of Horizons. 
● Present the Horizons budget to the SRES Board of Trustees (usually in October). 
● Manage resources within the budget to ensure Horizons operates within budget limits. 
Program Management:
● Assume responsibility for overseeing development and effective implementation of the Horizons Summer Program, including, but not limited to: 
  o Interviewing, hiring, training, supervising, and evaluating all Horizons staff and teachers.
  o Recruiting, scheduling, and training volunteers; 
  o Recruiting, selecting, and enrolling students; 
  o Ensuring daily food service and bus transportation; and 
  o Contracting with a local swimming pool for weekly swim lessons. 
● Maintain a culture and climate that attracts, motivates, and retains a diverse staff of top quality people. 
● Communicate with and coordinate summer program logistics (i.e. room and bus usage) in partnership with SRES staff. 
● Ensure compliance with all state licensing requirements, as needed, as well as Horizons National Affiliate policies. 
● Develop and oversee year-round program components, including Family Events. 
● Adhere to Horizons National requirements, participate in monthly Director webinars and attend the Horizons National annual conference.

Board Support:
● Attend all Advisory Board and Board Committee meetings, serving in an ex-officio capacity, prepared to share all necessary information regarding Horizons goals and significant activities. 
● Work in partnership with the Advisory Board Chair and Committee Chairs to develop meeting agendas, schedule meetings, reserve meeting space, and take meeting minutes (as needed). 
● Prepare monthly reports and quarterly financial reports for Board meetings. 
● Maintain records of all Advisory Board and Committee meetings. 
● Serve as a liaison between staff and the Advisory Board.
● Support the board in creating and updating the strategic and fundraising plans.  
Public/Community Relations:
● Promote awareness about Horizons to the following constituent groups via newsletters, emails, and social media: 
  ○ Broader community
  ○ SRES faculty, staff, and parents
  ○ Trinity Episcopal Church staff and parishioners
  ○ Butler University faculty and staff
  ○ Partner schools/referral sources 
  ○ Partner organizations
  ○ Horizons families
  ○ Donors
● Coordinate Horizons communication to the SRES community in partnership with SRES's public relations staff member.
● Oversee efforts to develop Horizons marketing materials (i.e. brochures). 
● Ensure an active presence on social media (Facebook, Twitter, & Instagram) and update website content. 
● Establish sound working relationships and cooperative arrangements with community groups and organizations that can support the Horizons program in a variety of ways.

Horizons and St. Richard's Episcopal School: While Horizons operates as an independent organization, it is a program of St. Richard's Episcopal School (SRES) and operates under the 501(c)(3) of SRES, where St. Richard's acts as the fiduciary agent. Horizons does not receive any direct financial support from SRES, but instead receives time of SRES employees for administrative support, facility and equipment use, and general supplies. Horizons is not a religious organization.
