Under the direction of the Senior Program Director of Youth Development, the School Age Program Director is responsible for developing and administering school age and family programs.  This includes, but is not limited to the Before & After School Program, special events, and development of other community-based programs for school age participants for the Center in accordance with Association goals, objectives, and policies. The Program Director must understand their role in helping build relationships and continue program development on the west side of Indianapolis.

This position requires a degree in child development, early childhood, recreation, elementary education/ related field, or its equivalent in related experience, and a minimum 2-3 years previous professional experience, working with school age children specifically, in YMCA or similar agency is vital to the success of this position.  Applicant must have basic programming skills with special emphasis on school age youth and family activities.  The ability to relate to all age groups is essential.  Experience with volunteers, fiscal management, and program development is also important.  The need exists to be current with community trends.
Due to the diversity of responsibility, a high degree of organizational ability is needed.  Strong skills are necessary in supervision, management, income production, expense control, public relations, promotion, public speaking, communication skills, fund-raising, grant writing and record-keeping.

• Develops administers and controls the designated budgets, including meeting income targets and expense control, in consultation with the Senior Director.
• Selects, trains and supervises paid and volunteer department staff.
• Interprets Association goals, objectives and policies to the community and constituency.
• Evaluates programs and recommend changes based on compatibility with the Center and Association goals. Is responsible for the development of new program thrusts.
• Guides assigned Center committees in formulating policies and programs consistent with Center and Association goals.
• Shares responsibilities for Center/program supervision, public relations, program development, planning and promotions as agreed.
• Assists the international aspect of the Association including World Service education and fundraising.
• Evaluates performance of department personnel on an annual basis.
• Supervises and is accountable for care and maintenance of department equipment and facilities.
• Shares responsibility for providing income through membership fees and special subsidies.
• Assists in the annual Y for All campaign.
• Directs and organizes department program activities compatible with Center and Association goals.
• Involved with other community groups in identifying and responding to community needs and issues.
• Assists with any other projects or activities as assigned.

1. Visually inspect building/program locations for cleanliness and necessary repairs.
2. Ability to stand for extended periods of time.
3. Ability to lift up to 40 lbs. and transport such weight from one location to another.
4. Ability to demonstrate and lead activities.
5. Ability to visibly observe youth participants.
6. Ability to effectively present information (e.g. train others) and respond to questions from managers, customers, vendors and the general public.
7. Ability to use sound judgment and make decisions using YMCA policies and procedures as a guide.
8. Interprets Association goals, objectives and policies to the community and membership.
9. Ability to communicate with parents and youth participants effectively.
10. Ability to work in a variety of environments (e.g. indoor, outdoor, warm, cold & humid conditions)
11. Ability to recognize potential hazards/unsafe conditions and respond appropriately according to guidelines outlined by OSHA and the YMCA of Greater Indianapolis, especially those related to Child Abuse Prevention.
12. Obtains required training certifications and keep all certifications current.
13. Ability to observe and promote safety and security procedures.
14. Physically and mentally able to respond to emergencies and administer CPR & First Aid effectively.

• Supports our YMCA Y for All Campaign by inviting members to contribute.
• Able to articulate the role and the importance of volunteers.

• Provide an environment in which valuing diversity is encouraged and the 40 Developmental Assets can be built and emphasized.

The effectiveness of performance in this position can be judged by:
• The Center/program being viewed as a leader in school age programs.
• Adequate planning and organization is evident in program areas, meeting of deadlines, sufficient promotion, and the attainment of agreed upon goals and objectives.
• Sound fiscal management as evidenced by adequate income production and expense control, as budgeted and adjusted during fiscal year.
• Evidence of creativity in problem solving through good planning and ability to adjust program to provide optimum quality.
• On-site and off-site facilities and grounds used are safe, clean, and well maintained as appropriate for their designed use.
• Maximum enrollments in programs and steady increases in participation, which may include youth memberships.
• Awareness of community and consistency through accurate assessment of changing community needs.
• Evidence of the YMCA having high credibility in the community particularly in the areas of youth enrichment, leadership and development, program development and volunteerism.
• Follow-up of programs is shown through regular process of evaluation for future planning and analysis of program content
