Purpose of Position/ Summary
The Director of Public and Family Engagement is responsible for setting the strategic direction for public, adult and family programming including the daily experience at the Indiana State Museum and Historic Sites.  Responsibilities include the conceptualization, implementation, promotion and evaluation of all programming and services for families, adults, and multigenerational audiences, both in-house and through outreach, in a manner that supports the museum's mission and serves core audiences.  This position is also responsible for working collaboratively across departments to enhance the visitor experience and promote participation and engagement in all museum spaces, including outreach efforts.  Incumbent also is expected to manage staff workloads, budgets, schedules, and ensure on-time completion of tasks.

Essential Duties/ Responsibilities  

Vision and Leadership:
-  Manage and administer programs for public, adult and family audiences including special events, community festivals, holiday programs, classes, daily engagement, demonstrations, gallery interpretation, tours and community collaborations
-  Develop new public and family programs and reimagine current programs to address changing needs of parents, adults and the general public
-  Oversee the daily museum experience in core galleries and temporary exhibits including the Naturalist Lab and any temporary gallery programming spaces
-  Identify and cultivate key community program partners such as community organizations, libraries, museums, universities, and extension services to advance the division's mission
-  Provide program development and implementation for changing exhibitions and core galleries
-  Work with the Vice President of Programs and Education Engagement and other departmental staff to develop and implement strategic goals, objectives and action plans for public, adult and family programs
-  Work with the Vice President of Programs and Education Engagement to create a comprehensive public, adult and family program schedule
-  Develop evaluation tools and strategies for public, adult and family programs
- Work with marketing and communications staff to develop and implement a marketing and sales plan in support of programs and activities; provide feedback the ISMHS website.
-  Foster strong local, regional and national network of peers in related fields
-  Perform related duties as assigned

Community and Support Organizations:
-  Establish and manage relationships with potential and ongoing community partners
-  Work with the Director of Interpretive Programs and Performing Arts to adapt and create public and outreach programs integrating interpretation and performing arts
-  Present workshops and sessions on various topics at local and statewide museum and education associations and organizations
-  Identify and work with statewide organizations involved public, adult and family programs to make them aware of museum offerings and determine how the museum can better reach and serve this audience  

Operations and Supervision:
-  Supervise Daily Engagement and Program Manager, Science and Innovation Program Manager, and Public Engagement Specialist through annual performance evaluations, monitoring project goals and objectives related to program development, program effectiveness and evaluation, and budget accurateness and awareness. 
-  Manage and facilitate public, adult and family programs including events, festivals, classes, demonstrations, tours, talks and activities
-  Within the public, adult and family programs, train and manage staff and volunteers assisting with the implementation of programs.  This will include hiring interns, screening volunteers, and consulting on new staff hiring opportunities. 
-  Coordinate and train staff facilitating public, adult and family programs, including inquiry-based, interactive, visitor-centered methodologies
-  The above supervision extends to formal and informal reviews of facilitator competency and supplementary training as deemed necessary
-  Ensure that institutional and departmental strategic plan goals are being actively considered in development of programs and met through actual programs delivered
-  Work with State Historic Sites staff to collaborate and coordinate public, adult and family programming
-  Prepare, administer and manage project  budgets for public, adult and family programming
-  Prepare and administer project budgets for public, adult and family programming
-  Work with the Daily Engagement Manager and Science and Innovations Program Manager to set annual goals for public, adult and family programming
-  Develop and implement on-going evaluation for all recurring and pilot programming and produce relevant reports
-  Provides excellent customer service to audience attending programs, as well as to all visitors and employees in museum
-  Serve on museum project teams

Responsibility
The Director of Public and Family Engagement is responsible for overseeing the direction and implementation of public, adult and family programs. Incumbent reports directly to the Vice President of Programs and Education Engagement.

Personal Work Relationships
The Director of Public and Family Engagement collaborates daily with programming staff to discuss ideas, plan programs, and provide assistance.  Incumbent must communicate program goals and needs with internal departments such as Marketing, Guest Services, Facility Rentals, Events, and Exhibit Production and will meet with curators to discuss ideas, gather information, and collaborate on projects. The incumbent works directly with the curatorial and Historic Site management staff to ensure historical and scientific accuracy and professional direction in program development.  The incumbent works directly with the volunteer coordinator for scheduled training sessions of volunteers and staff to present gallery programs and workshops. The Director of Public and Family Engagement collaborates with community partners and museum professionals in program, event, and festival development to discuss ideas, and receive professional assistance.

Physical Effort
Work is oriented to the office and museum galleries and education spaces.  Work requires being able to sit at a desk and work with a computer for long periods of time and some strenuous lifting related to setup for educational programs. Some travel is involved with public speaking engagements, attending conferences, workshops, meetings, and conventions and visiting Historic Sites.  Assisting in the development of new exhibition and project components may also require travel.

Working Conditions
The Director of Public and Family Engagement primarily works out of the Indianapolis office and spends time in museum galleries and education service areas. The position requires schedule flexibility, weekends, evenings, travel and overnight stays may sometimes be required.
