The Executive Director provides overall executive leadership of Habitat for Humanity of Madison County (HFHMC) and is responsible for promoting the vision and direction of the affiliate to serve families in need of simple, decent, and affordable housing in Madison County. The Executive Director acts at all times in accordance with the Articles of Incorporation, affiliate by-laws, policies, objectives and direction set by the affiliate Board of Directors.

Reports to:
The Executive Director reports to the President of the Board of Directors of Habitat for Humanity of Madison County.

KEY RESPONSIBILITY AREAS:

General Administration
a. As chief agent of Habitat for Humanity of Madison County, the Executive Director manages and supervises the day-to-day operations of the Corporation.
b. Attends and reports to the Board at monthly Board meetings.
c. Works with the Board to formalize a strategic plan. 
d. Recommends policies to the Board and ensures the implementation of policies adopted by the board.
e. Insures that HFHMC complies with Indiana state law governing non-profit charitable organizations.

Board Relations
a. Develops and recommends to the Board specific written long- and short-range plans.
b. Prepares the agenda for Board meetings in concert with the Board President, and presents oral and written reports to the Board.
c. Participates in the identification and recruitment of potential new Board members, and administers board member orientation
d. Stays informed of the activities of all committees and serves as a communication link within the affiliate. Helps insure that various Habitat policies, family selection criteria, house design criteria, sweat equity policy, affiliate covenant, etc. are being carried out.

Personnel
a. Hires other paid staff into positions in concert with the President as allocated by budget.
b. Supervises and evaluates paid staff in the fulfillment of their job descriptions. Provides written evaluations at least once a year.
c. Seeks independent contractors on a need basis.

Financial Management and Fundraising
a. Assumes responsibility for insuring the assets and financial affairs of HFHMC are carried out according to the Articles of Incorporation, by-laws, corporate policies and instructions of the Board of Directors.
b. In concert with the board president and the finance committee prepares annual budget.
c. Authorizes expenditures within the budget provided by the Board and advises the Board and finance committee of budget issues and future needs. Participates in development of the annual budget.
d. Administers fundraising through foundation grants, corporate foundation grants, corporate sponsorships, and individual donor programs.
e. Works with the Board to develop their capacity and ability for fundraising.
f. Provides leadership in fundraising events and in partnership with the Board.
g. Serves as loan originator, with all subsequent responsibilities.
h. Oversees mortgage delinquencies. 

Public, Community and Church Relations
a. Represents HFHMC in the local and state communities through media relations, meetings with individuals, business associations, corporations, foundations, and churches; attends community events as representative of HFHMC.
b. Cultivates relationships with community nonprofits.  Seeks opportunities to partner on collaborative projects that have a major impact on the community and HFHMC's mission.
c. Provides leadership in developing and maintaining active church relationships; serves as liaison to local churches.
d. Develops and maintains positive relationships with representatives of government agencies, city councils, and mayoral offices. Advocates cooperative action to address the needs of low-income working families.
e. Supervises Volunteer Program as delegated to volunteer coordinator
f. Maintains effective communication with Habitat for Humanity International (HFHI) to assure HFHMC's participation in HFHI programs.
g. Serves as official spokesperson for HFHMC.
h. Oversees overall communication plan and all public content related to the affiliate.
i. Supervises preparation of thank you letters for donors

Construction and Family Support
a. With Board assistance ensures that land acquisition and building activities are consistent with the mission of Habitat for Humanity.  May be involved in title and mortgage issues as needed.
b. Ensures that HFHMC staff and volunteers carry out construction of dwellings in full accord with Habitat standards, including safe building practices. 
c. Oversees administrative processes for family selection, orientation, participation in home building, and nurturing.

Fair Treatment of Staff, Board of Directors, Donors, Clients, Constituents, and the Public

b. Maintains the HFHMC workplace and work relationships in accordance with all local, state and federal non-discrimination laws, rules, and regulations.

Oversight of Resale Store
a. Provides leadership for store manager and store personnel.
b. Monitors human resource issues and procedures, including worker's compensation guidelines.
c. Insures that safety training is occurring for all store personnel. 

Required Skills and Experience
• Responsible leadership, directing successful teams and accountable for meeting objectives.
• Solid application of interpersonal and communications skills, internally and externally, with groups and individuals.
• Demonstrated ability in training, managing, leading and developing Associates in a consistent, positive and safety conscious manner.
• Basic computer skills, including spreadsheets, word processing, presentations and email.
• A history of successfully adapting to rapidly changing conditions
• Vision, energy and passion for Habitat's mission, values and integrity in all aspects of job
• Good understanding of philanthropy as it relates to the not-for-profit organization and a basic knowledge of resource development
• Demonstrates experience and excellent enthusiastic interpersonal skills to establish, build, and maintain effective working relationships with colleagues, board/committee members, donors, family partners and volunteers
• Enthusiasm and strong customer service orientation
• Well organized and detail oriented
• Team player and comfortable in an ecumenical environment
• Self-motivated with ability to work independently with little supervision
• Ability to maintain high level of confidentiality
• Tact, diplomacy and flexibility
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Ability to multi-task
• Pass a background check
• Able to work longer hours, evenings or weekends when necessary

Required education
Baccalaureate degree strongly desired; Associate degree with appropriate experience may be considered.
