POSITION PURPOSE
The Museum Home Program Specialist is part of the Operations Team and reports to the Museum Director. In this position, the Museum Home Program Specialist will create engaging programming events based on the history and historical assets of the James Whitcomb Riley (JWR) Museum Home and Riley Children's Foundation. In addition, the Program Specialist will curate and steward the Home's historical contents and the Home itself. The Program Specialist also assists the Event Sales Manager with event preparation and leading group tours. This work advances the educational mission of the Home and preserves the legacy of James Whitcomb Riley.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Programming
• Create programming and events inspired by the Home's historical content and the history and legacy of James Whitcomb Riley. These programs should engage the public on a variety of levels and could include lectures, musical performances, special dinners and festivals, among others.
 o Work closely with the Event Sales Manager on event planning.
 o Assist in the setup of events, including moving furniture and equipment.
• Research and create content based on the Museum Home collection and history.
 o Create engaging content for the Museum Home's social media platforms.
 o Create exhibits and displays in the Visitor Center that connect to the Home and the mission of the Riley Children's Foundation.
 o Submit articles on Riley, his legacy, and the Museum Home to outside publications, such as historical journals or local papers.
• Catalogue and maintain the Museum Home collection of art, furniture, books and documents.
 o Choose an appropriate database for the collection.
 o Create detailed, well researched entries for each item.
 o Maintain and update the database as needed.
• Respond to outside research inquiries.
• Write grants to fund program development and maintenance of the collection.
• Work with other cultural institutions to form mutually beneficial partnerships.

2. Tours
• Lead Tours: Must be able to give the standard Museum tour to any visitors to the James Whitcomb Riley Museum Home.
• Special Tours: Must be able to adapt the basic tour to meet the varying needs of event attendees, school groups, or other large groups.

3. Administrative
• Cleaning: Maintain the cleanliness of the James Whitcomb Riley Museum and Visitor Center through regular cleaning, and a yearly deep cleaning in January.
• Museum operation: Partner with Museum staff to maintain smooth operation of Museum during visitor hours and special events. Assist other staff members as needed.
• Meetings: Prepare for and actively participate in all Riley Children's Foundation meetings as appropriate. Ensure expectations and tools for meeting agendas and follow-up are implemented.
• Budget: Work with your officer/direct manager to develop, manage and monitor the budget, staying within overall budget guidelines.
• Technology: Understand and effectively use the technology available at the Riley Children's Foundation.
• Compliance: Ensure strict compliance with all Foundation policies, as well as local, state and federal laws that govern business practices.

4. Riley Children's Foundation Representative
• Presentations: Represent Riley Children's Foundation through delivering speeches about the history of James Whitcomb Riley and his legacy, including the history of Riley Children's Foundation, its mission, and future goals.

5. Other Duties as Assigned
• Riley Children's Foundation events: Participate in Riley Children's Foundation events as requested.
• Other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
To perform this job successfully, an individual must have the following education and/or experience.
• Education: Bachelor's degree required, Masters in Public History or related field preferred.
• Experience: Minimum 2 years of experience, ideally in small museum curation and/or program development. High level of knowledge of historical research techniques.
• Skills: Solid relationship building. Understanding of visitor needs and perceptions. Strong ability to speak in public. Excellent written communication. Problem-solving, research and analytical skills. Attention to detail and organization. Proficiency in Microsoft Office products with a key focus on Word, Excel and Outlook; experience with SharePoint is a plus. Proficiency in use of databases. Collaborative spirit.
