Foster Success seeks a data-informed problem solver with experience moving initiatives forward and implementing change within a collaborative environment and complex organization to grow our Education and Workforce Programs and related strategies. 

As part of the Foster Success leadership team, the Senior Director of Workforce and Education Strategy will advance the organization's mission by ensuring teens and young adults who have experienced foster care are supported in building and advancing their education and career goals. This position will report to the Chief Operating Officer and will supervise the education and workforce teams.

The Senior Director will work closely with the Foster Success leadership team to grow the strategy and vision for Foster Success's education and workforce strategies. The Senior Director will work with their team to implement this strategy and provide pathways for teens and young adults to transition from high school into a variety of post-secondary education and career training opportunities. 

An ideal candidate will have experience in access and retention strategies in either Workforce or Higher Education and must be able to lead the design of programs to meet strategic outcomes while also continually advancing strategies forward. They should be comfortable working with complex data systems and data analysis. The person in this role must have strong relationship-building skills and the ability to represent Foster Success with external partners and funders.   

Organization Overview

Foster Success is committed to improving the foster care system and ensuring that teens and young adults transitioning out of foster care are educated, housed, financially stable, employed, and connected to a support system by age 26. Our team accomplishes this through programs delivery, policy change, and partnership developments in the areas of K-12 & post-secondary education, workforce development, health & well-being, financial empowerment, housing stability, and youth engagement.

Position Responsibilities

Leadership, Attraction, and Retention - Lead and support a multi-person team through direct supervision of two Assistant Directors and Workforce Program Coordinators as well as support Regional Education Coordinators. Attract, retain, and develop the talent needed to advance the goals and priorities of Foster Success. Build a thriving team through communication, coaching, guidance, and training. Provide training and technical assistance to team & program participants as needed.

Program Management - Determine and review eligibility, placement history/guardianship in conjunction with independent living specialists. Review and confirm school information, cost of attendance, and financial assistance information.

Outreach and Awareness - Represent the organization on a local and national level in meetings with external partners and by attending partner events. Represent the organization to the public as a child-welfare thought leader. Build and maintain strong relationships with a diverse set of external partners. 

Organizational Strategy and Leadership - Provide training to team members on best and promising practices related to education, workforce, and advocacy.  Develop and refine programs that contribute to the organization's education strategy. 

Data Tracking and Reporting - Obtain participant and partner feedback through evaluations, surveys, focus groups, and other tools for reporting and program improvement purposes. Build data systems that track participant involvement, retention, and completion of programs. 


  • Bachelor's degree required; Master's degree preferred. 
  • 5-7 years of progressive leadership experience including supervision of multiple team members.
  • 3 years of demonstrated success in the areas of advocacy, program implementation and evaluation, and process improvement.
  • Extensive experience in managing multiple grants and budgets
  • Experience working with young adults between the ages of 16-26 from diverse backgrounds and the ability to create inclusive environments for both participants and partners. 
  • Ability to partner with teens and young adults transitioning out of foster care, colleagues, and stakeholders to identify and achieve shared goals.
  • Effective leadership in areas such as academic and career pathway planning, program development, advising, and student and employee development and retention. 
  • Experience collaborating with post-secondary education and workforce development programs with an understanding of the intersection of the workforce and academic programs and initiatives such as the non-credit to credit pipeline.

  • Adhere to all policies and procedures outlined in Foster Success Employment agreements and the organizational Handbook, including all confidentiality requirements for all client information.
  • Work a flexible schedule that includes some weekends and evenings to meet program goals. 
  • Hold a valid Driver's License and have access to a vehicle or the ability to rent a vehicle for work-related travel.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in computer skills and experience with and knowledge of relevant software, particularly Salesforce, Zoom, Google, and Microsoft Products.
