Reports to: Vice President of Development 


The Director of Individual Development serves as a key development team member and an active participant in making strategic decisions affecting individual donors to the Center for the Performing Arts (Center) and the Great American Songbook Foundation (GASF). This position develops and executes multiple fundraising campaigns focused on individual donors. The successful candidate will help forge new relationships locally and nationwide to build and expand the individual donor base for both the Center and GASF.

Essential Functions

  1. Develop and manage individual giving program including Annual Fund, planned giving and capital campaigns 
  2. Serve as a key solicitor for individual donors and work in consultation with the Development Strategy & Research Manager to identify prospects for the pipeline 
  3. Responsible for predetermined amounts of the Center and GASF fundraising goals 
  4. Actively carry a portfolio of 90-120 individual donors and high-capacity prospects, retaining and upgrading 

existing donors while also identifying and acquiring new donors through research, cultivation and targeted outreach for gifts ranging from $5,000 to $10 million 

  1. Work with development staff, volunteer leadership and senior management to develop specific cultivation and solicitation strategies 
  2. Demonstrate motivational and problem-solving capabilities with a high degree of integrity, ethics and dedication to the mission of the Center and GASF 
  3. Participate on the annual gala committee, including securing table commitments and individual tickets and assisting with event-related items 
  4. Directly supervise the full-time GASF Individual Giving Associate responsible for cultivating, stewarding and managing a pipeline of GASF donors 
  5. Help supervise the part-time Annual Fund Manager, who oversees broad-based and entry-level individual donor strategies for the Annual Fund 
  6. Help supervise a part-time Individual Giving Associate, who oversees gift acknowledgement, benefit fulfillment and stewardship activities/events 
  7. Utilize Tessitura software to track and engage donors and prospects 
  8. Serve as a key strategist for overall philanthropic visioning and execution across the organization 
  9. Participate in the annual budgeting cycle as a member of the development staff 
  10. Support other fundraising events as a key member of the team executing said events 
  11. Collaborate with other development staff members

Required Education and Experience
Level of Education: 
Bachelor's Degree
Experience: Minimum of seven years in a previous nonprofit development position
Previous experience using CRM and/or fundraising platform (i.e., Tessitura, Raiser's Edge, etc.) 

Preferred Education and Experience 

  1. Bachelor's degree, preferably in fundraising, arts management, communications or business. 
  2. Prefer experience in individual fundraising, including Annual Fund, capital and endowment campaigns

  1. Ability to effectively communicate in person, by phone and through persuasive writing 
  2. Engaging and compelling style in written and verbal solicitation 
  3. Proven ability to work independently and to contribute to a highly successful, results-oriented team 
  4. Understanding of fundraising and public relations principles and techniques 
  5. Ability to handle multiple priorities and tight deadlines with professionalism and grace; polish is vital 
  6. Maintain attention to detail and appropriate follow-up 
  7. Ability to build and grow relationships, plus understanding of moves management principles 
  8. Ability to interact with the public and address their questions and concerns 
  9. Ability to think logically and problem-solve to analyze situations, troubleshoot and make sound decisions 
  10. Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously, manage projects and meet deadlines 
  11. Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint), Adobe Professional and other software applications necessary to perform essential job functions and support other team members 
  12. Strong organizational, process-oriented, time-management and logical-thinking skills 
  13. Ability to build and maintain positive work relationships with management, staff members and external contacts 

Supervisory Responsibility 

This position has supervisory responsibilities for the full-time GASF Individual Giving Officer as well as partial supervision of the Annual Fund and Corporate Relations Manager and Individual Giving Associate.

Position Type and Expected Hours of Work 

This is a full-time salaried position. Flexibility is required, including evenings, weekends and special events as needed. 


Ability to travel locally and nationally for donor meetings and events.
