Organization overview: 

St. Mary's Child Center works directly with almost 300 Preschool families and close to 1,000 Educators annually. The organization is a well-regarded and financially sound nonprofit organization, based in Indianapolis. 

The Early Childhood Program offers two initiatives that are designed to impact school readiness and provide significant life-long positive outcomes: The Preschool Program serves 144 three to five-year-old children in our classrooms at 3 sites in Indianapolis. 93% of the children live in poverty. The Educational Outreach Program provides professional development activities for community educators to allow them to provide high-quality early learning experiences to ensure the success of children served at their schools.

St. Mary's Child Center is unique in the exceptionally high-quality programming provided for the low cost to participants. The Preschool Program is inspired by the Reggio Emilia educational philosophy. The Reggio Approach is based on the image of the child as strong, competent and capable with work infused in experiences in the arts. In addition, St. Mary's fosters the child's mental and behavioral health through work in educational neuroscience and brain-informed discipline. 

St. Mary's Child Center currently employs 39 staff members and has had as many as 50 in recent years. About 55 volunteers serve on the board or as senior advisors with additional volunteers on committees. Our current annual budget is $2.8 million. Revenue is raised through foundation, corporate and individual gifts and through special events. We also receive support from United Way and the Archdiocese of Indianapolis. We participate and receive funding through the Adult Child Care Food Program through the Department of Education, the Child Development Block Grant (CCDBG) vouchers and On My Way PreK funds. The organization's strategic priorities are: impact more children and more children better, broaden the St. Mary Child Center contributor base, balance St. Mary Child Center's desire to serve more children with the need for financial stability, and strengthen St. Mary's commitment to diversity.

Position duties:  

St. Mary's Child Center is searching for an Executive Director to lead the organization into the next phase of its evolution. The Executive Director will serve as the spiritual, business and educational leader with a mission-driven focus to ensure sustainability and viability of St. Mary's Child Center through providing visionary leadership of strategic development and execution, oversight of personnel, budgeting, business affairs, facilities, marketing & communications, fundraising, student enrollment, high quality educational programming, educational outreach and advocacy.

Specific Duties

Business Leader

  • Driving the strategic planning process and leading program growth as it relates to the strategic plan, mission, board and leadership vision. 
  • Providing financial support through effective planning, practice and monitoring in the areas of personnel, programming, facilities, curriculum support and resources, educational outreach, professional development, fund development and advocacy.
  • Insuring and monitoring the implementation of all board policies. Attend board committee meetings: Finance/Executive, Board Development, Fund Development, Program and Outreach.
  • Overseeing building organization, business administration, fiscal operations and leadership staff
  • Assess potential opportunities and shortfalls then make necessary recommendations for solutions to Board for long term success of organization.
  • Raising awareness of school needs and attaining the funds to meet those needs with the development department, board fund development committee, executive committee and finance committee.
  • Regularly meeting with donors and perspective donors including, but not limited to, breakfast or lunch to discuss mission and work at St. Mary's and conduct tours of the school. Follow up with donors.
  • Attending all special events for St. Mary's Child Center, speaking as requested, about the mission and our work.
  • Insuring the development and implementation of a funding and marketing plan as well as all programs and campaigns of the development department. Monitoring long-range planning and development goals.
  • Hiring, supervising and dismissing leadership team as well as approving of hiring and/or dismissal of the staff based on the recommendation of the members of the leadership team.
  • Ensuring partnerships are established between St. Mary's and the community:
    • Ensuring that St. Mary's promotes collaboration with United Way of Central Indiana, our educational institution partners and our partner program sites.
    • Ensuring that the work of St. Mary's impacts the wider community through advocacy efforts and work with legislators to further the understanding of the importance of high-quality early childhood education. 
    • Ensure that our families are our partners in all areas of the life of the school.

Educational Leader:

  • Providing consultation to Program Directors in all areas of practice
  • Overseeing the work of staff to facilitation licensing, performance on Indiana's Paths to Quality and NAEYC accreditation.
  • Overseeing the work of staff in providing professional development and community educational outreach.
  • Supervising the implementation of best practices in early childhood practice in all areas of curriculum and family engagement.

Spiritual Leader

  • Bearing ultimate responsibility for the integration of faith and culture within the school and ensuring that all practices, programs and decisions align with the teachings of the Catholic Church.
  • Participating in ongoing catechetical formation and spiritual development to provide sustenance for self and this ministry of Catholic education and faith formation. 
  • Praying with and for those you serve (children, staff, families, community).

Position qualification:  The successful candidate may have: 

  • Strong leadership skills
  • Experience with nonprofit organizations
  • Acceptance of the beliefs, ways of work and servant leadership culture of St. Mary's Child Center to ensure the best for children and families served.
  • Good judgement, diplomacy, ability to display Gospel values, and show respect for the dignity of every person.
  • Ability to safeguard confidential information.
  • Interpersonal skills that result in strong, healthy relationships with all served through the ministry. 
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, the ability to organize large amounts of information, the ability to multi-task and have attention to detail.
  • Success in working as a team member, managing time, working independently, handling multiple responsibilities and setting priorities.
  • A willingness to embrace and follow the Reggio Emilia educational philosophy and utilize strategies in Applied Educational Neuroscience
  • Demonstrated success in helping to develop strategic fundraising programs and growth initiatives with proven success in raising funds. 
  • The ability to think strategically with regard to organizational opportunities and challenges and managing them. 
  • The ability to establish direction, make informed decisions about operations and infrastructure in order to further the organization's objectives.
  • Helpful skills include common sense, tact, persistence, resilience, ability to think outside the box and bring new ideas, passion, and a humble approach to the work that we do.
  • The ability to work constructively with the Board of Directors and build strong relationships with donors, collaborative partners and stakeholders.
  • Ongoing professional development and faith formation

Requirements

  • Must be a practicing Catholic.
  • Must be able to meet Archdiocesan background check and Indiana licensing requirements.
  • Bachelor's degree required with a master's degree or equivalent experience preferred.
  • Ability to manage organizational fiscal, programmatic, and operational components of an organization.
