SUMMARY:

A successful not-for-profit, faith-based volunteer organization is seeking an action-oriented, self- starter with a strategic mindset, reporting directly to the Chairman of the Board of Directors while providing leadership and guidance to the SAWs Staff. Must believe in and be an advocate for SAWs' mission of building wheelchair ramps for permanently disabled persons with limited means in the State of Indiana. SAWs performs it's mission providing meaningful volunteer opportunities for the construction of wheelchair ramps.  

The Executive Director is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the organization, current and long-term financial sustainability, management of the staff, developing fundraising partnerships, marketing messages, and public relations. The other Staff include a Senior Accountant, Vice President of Operations, Regional Hub Manager, Program Development Manager, and grant-writers. Duties of the Executive Director also include negotiating with and obtaining vendors for materials used in building wooden wheelchair ramps.

The office is in Indianapolis and includes a warehouse and fully equipped woodworking shop for pre-fabrication of wheelchair components for ramps to be built in Marion and surrounding counties. Duties also include the general supervision of Hubs located throughout the State of Indiana, staffed by volunteers, and containing warehouse and pre-fabrication facilities. The Executive Director is responsible for the implementation of safety policies and ramp construction standards. The Executive Director will promote and coordinate SAWs vision of diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility for volunteers, staff, donors, and clients. 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Possesses a general understanding of nonprofit accounting principles, profit and loss, risk, reward, and a return on investments while managing the operational financial expenses. 
  • Collaborates with the Senior Accountant on all donations received, grant documents and tracks contribution channels, assists in issuing monthly interim financial statements and reports the monthly results to the Board and/or Executive Committee each month.
  • Routinely provides SAWs activity updates to all Board members in the months that the Board does have a scheduled meeting.
  • Works closely with the SAWs Staff when initiating and crafting newsletters, donor solicitations, addressed to corporate partners, churches, and other sources of donor-based funding.  
  • Provides effective and inspiring leadership for all SAWs Hub locations for the Project Managers, Area Coordinators and the Volunteers and maximizes client ramp construction success.
  • Establishes the annual SAWs Budget for approval by the Board of Directors.
  • Interacts on a regular basis with the Senior Accountant, Operations and Grant Coordinators to assist and eliminate any strategic issues, hurdles, or roadblocks within their departments.
  • Proactively identifies key SAWs strategic problems and challenges, recommends, and provides possible solutions to the SAWs management team and Board, and then implements those actions while keeping all team members accountable.
  • Actively interacts to maintain continuing relationships with current, past, and potential donors, i.e., Churches, Corporate Sponsors, Foundations, Organizations, Individuals and Local and or County Government officials. 
  • Directly responsible for all fundraising efforts, maintaining and implementing a developed plan to secure adequate sustainable donations from all channels, continually working to expand, increase and cultivate new sources as well as maintaining the existing donation base.
  • Responsible for training, onboarding, hiring, performance reviews, bonus pool structure, and career development for all staff and contractors.
  • Ability to travel locally within Marion and surrounding Counties during ramp building season, and work nights, weekend, and holidays, if required.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/LICENSURE:

  • 5+ years working in the nonprofit environment with management experience
  • Possess valid driver's license and kept in good standing during employment
  • College degree in business preferred and nonprofit management curriculum a plus.
  • Experience in strategic planning and the ability to cultivate positive relationships with key stakeholders both internally and externally.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Strong written and oral communicates skills 
  • Strong organizational and problem-solving skills a plus
  • Ability to manage, develop and implement corporate strategies
  • Ability to identify and demonstrate best practices with a proactive approach to the organization
  • Basic software ability with Word, Excel and Outlook
  • Willing to learn customized software packages such as Builder Trend, Volunteer Hub and Salsa
  • Enjoys working in a not-for-profit environment and supports the SAWs mission

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Hearing and speaking to exchange information. 
  • Dexterity of hands to perform the tasks required of the position. 
  • Sight in order to be aware of hazards and dangers found in the nature of the work. 
  • Regularly stand, walk, and sit for extended periods of time. 
  • Ability to climb, stoop, kneel, reach, push, pull, grasp, and perform repetitive motions. 
  • Climb ladders of varying heights. 
  • Ability to maneuver in crawl spaces, attics, and utility tunnels. 
  • Ability to work at extreme heights. 
  • Lift moderate to heavy objects up to 50 pounds

WORK ENVIRONMENT

This position will take place in an indoor office environment, work from home, as well as outdoor environment, with climate changes. It may involve being exposed to hazardous conditions.
