Classical Music Indy (CMI) is seeking a new Executive Director to provide strategic leadership for our dynamic nonprofit arts organization that is changing the classical music narrative.

Overview

CMI's mission is to inspire people in our community with the power of classical music in three distinct yet synergistic public spaces: on-air, online, and in the community. Our vision is to be the most equitable, accessible provider of high-quality classical music opportunities for audiences and artists in Central Indiana. This vision inspires unique content offerings, innovative distribution channels, opportunities for historically underrepresented artists, strategic collaborations, and authentic audience development.

CMI's programming is reflective of all artists, with emphasis on collecting, preserving, commissioning, and distributing the works of historically underrepresented artists in the genre. We achieve this by engaging exceptional staff and artistic talent to co-develop programming.

Organizational Background

Founded in 1968, Classical Music Indy (CMI) has provided over 50 years of free classical music to greater Indianapolis and is the leading classical music content creator for the local music economy. With significant program expansion over the last decade, CMI's core program areas now include:

  • Digital Media Content Creation, distributing an equitable representation of artists via radio syndication, streaming, podcasting, videos, blogs, and NOTE magazine;
  • Artist Engagement, providing local independent artists inclusive opportunities for paid performances, commissions, residencies, and fellowships;
  • Community Outreach, increasing access to arts experiences through free public performances in both live and virtual settings;
  • Music Education, or free units of study and discussion guides for PreK-12 students and their teachers tied to state and national standards; and,
  • The Peck Classical Music Library, a diverse collection of over 49,000 recorded musical works representing an equitable mix of classical artists, which amplifies those artists' reach to local and national audiences.

In 1986, CMI received the prestigious George Foster Peabody Award, only the fourth ever received by an Indiana broadcast entity in the then 48-year history of the award. In 2020, CMI's podcast, Melanated Moments in Classical Music, received Best Music Podcast at the national Black Podcasting Awards.

While the pandemic was transformative for the organization, CMI continues to grow its audience, especially with young adult audiences, with nearly 60 percent of our users aged 45 or younger. CMI seeks to continue this positive trajectory, implementing a new strategic plan in collaboration with the new executive director that will explore and define strategies for expanded artist services, commissioning of major new works, and organizational sustainability strategies over the next three years.

Position Summary

Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Executive Director will have overall strategic and operational responsibility for CMI's staff, programs, finances, and execution of its mission and vision. The Executive Director will provide effective leadership by demonstrating authentic community engagement, building strategic partnerships, embracing diverse artists and audiences, and growing income to sustainably support the organization.

Responsibilities

Leadership and Management

  • Ensure programmatic excellence aligned with CMI's mission, vision, and strategic plan.
  • Ensure operational support systems, such as finance, administration, fundraising, marketing and communications, human resources, and technology are aligned with the resources needed to achieve strategic goals.
  • Develop, manage, and support an engaged board of directors and serve as an ex-officio member of each board committee.
  • Develop, coach, and retain CMI's high-performing senior management team and actively cultivate new staff and contract talent.
  • Ensure effective systems to track and report strategic plan progress, reach progressive equity milestones, and evaluate programs to measure successes and communicate results to board members, funders, and other stakeholders.
  • Build an internal culture that functions like a community, or place where people bond around shared values, feel valued as human beings, and have a voice in decisions that affect them.

Income Generation, Fundraising, Marketing, and Communications

  • Expand income-generating and fundraising activities to support existing operations and lessen dependency on CMI's reserve funds.
  • Continually refine and improve organizational marketing and communications to develop new audiences that have a strong connection to CMI's brand positioning.
  • Use external presence, relationships, and strategic partnership building to garner new opportunities.

Planning & New Business

  • Design and implement strategic business plans that build upon local assets for program expansion into new markets (i.e., statewide, regional, and national).
  • Secure the financial resources to implement initiatives resulting from business planning.
  • Build strategic partnerships in new markets, establishing and stewarding relationships with prospective partners, funders, and community leaders in these markets.
  • Practice authentic community engagement, ensuring CMI programs are welcome in the communities they serve.

Qualifications

The Executive Director will be deeply committed to CMI's mission to inspire people in the community with the power of classical music. All candidates must have proven leadership, business planning, staff management, fundraising, and project management experience. Concrete, demonstrable experience and other qualifications include:

  • Minimum of a bachelor's degree in a relevant arts or nonprofit field with at least three years of senior management experience. Graduate studies considered a plus.
  • Expert knowledge of classical music is not required, but a strong appreciation of the genre is a must.
  • Steadfast commitment to diversity, equity, access, and inclusion with proven examples of working effectively with diverse groups of people.
  • Excellence in organizational management with the ability to coach staff and develop high-performance teams, set and achieve strategic objectives, and manage a budget.
  • Past success cultivating and securing charitable donations and grants from individuals, private foundations, public funders, or corporations.
  • Past success working with a board of directors with the ability to cultivate existing board member relationships.
  • Strong marketing, communications, or audience development experience with the ability to engage a wide range of stakeholders from a variety of backgrounds and interests.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills; a persuasive and passionate communicator with excellent interpersonal and multidisciplinary project skills.
  • Action-oriented, entrepreneurial, adaptable, and self-directed.
  • Agile and resourceful problem solver with a solutions-over-obstacles approach.
  • Committed to lifelong learning and continuous improvement.
  • Mission-driven with passion, integrity, and positive attitude.

Compensation and Benefits

CMI offers a competitive compensation package commensurate with experience. This is a full-time exempt position with an annual salary range of $70,000-$85,000.
